After their triumph as they lifted their 20th Premier League title during the 2012/2013 season Manchester United experienced their worst season in decades as they stumbled to a dismal seventh placed finish this past May. Subsequently, the Red Devils are out of European competition for the first time since 1990 and are now hoping to secure a top-four finish with only domestic competition to focus on.
Despite a good pre-season, Louis Van Gaal's men experienced some stumbles during the earlier part of this campaign and as recently as last month, a loss to cross-town rivals Manchester City saw them in ninth places. Fans, naturally, feared that the nightmare from last season was something that was still lingering, but since then, the Premier League giants have strung together an impressive run of five straight wins that have vaulted them up the table into third place.
Robin van Persie's brace against Southampton--who themselves had been flying high and now have suffered three consecutive losses--was the seventh in seven goals against the Saints for the Dutch star and was enough to keep their winning run going, much to the relief of Manchester United supporters around the world.

#mufc performances so underwhelming, but recent results - somehow, with mix-and-match defence - have been very good. Something to build on.
