Sejarah, format, organisasi, dan liputan media Australia Cup

Australia Cup, sebelumnya dikenal sebagai FFA Cup, adalah kompetisi piala sepak bola nasional utama di Australia. Didirikan pada tahun 2014, turnamen ini dikelola oleh Football Australia, yang sebelumnya dikenal sebagai Football Federation Australia.

Australia Cup mengikuti jadwal musim panas ke musim semi, dimulai pada bulan Februari dan berakhir pada bulan September atau November. Turnamen ini dimulai dengan babak pendahuluan yang melibatkan lebih dari 700 klub dari piramida sepak bola Australia. Namun, kompetisi utama dimulai dari babak 32 besar.

Pada edisi-edisi sebelumnya, klub A-League Men secara otomatis lolos ke babak 32 besar. Saat ini, hanya 10 klub divisi pertama yang berpartisipasi: delapan teratas dari musim A-League sebelumnya langsung lolos, sementara empat terbawah bersaing dalam playoff untuk dua tempat tersisa (peringkat 9 melawan 12 dan 10 melawan 11). Sisa 22 peserta terdiri dari Member Federation Clubs, tim dari tingkat kedua atau di bawahnya.

Turnamen ini menggunakan format sistem gugur, dengan pertandingan dimainkan dalam satu leg (pemenang melaju, dan yang kalah tersingkir). Undian menentukan pertandingan dari babak 32 besar hingga semifinal.

Mulai 2024-25, juara Australia Cup akan lolos ke AFC Champions League Two. Namun, klub-klub yang berbasis di Selandia Baru seperti Wellington Phoenix dan Auckland FC tidak memenuhi syarat untuk berpartisipasi dalam kompetisi klub AFC dan menjadi pengecualian.

Tim-tim A-League Men sebagian besar mendominasi kompetisi ini, dengan Adelaide United memenangkan gelar perdana pada tahun 2014 melawan Perth Glory. Perth Glory mencapai final lagi pada tahun berikutnya tetapi kalah dari Melbourne Victory. Sydney FC dan Macarthur FC juga meraih kesuksesan yang signifikan, dengan Macarthur memenangkan piala dua kali dalam empat tahun sejak debutnya di A-League pada 2020-21.

Australia Cup memberikan dua penghargaan individu.
