About CA Peñarol
Club Atlético Peñarol is a professional football club from Montevideo, Uruguay. The club was founded in 1891 under the name Central Uruguay Railway Cricket Club, but it was later changed to Peñarol in 1914. The team’s supporters refer to the club as Los Carboneros or El Decano, due to their long history as one of the dominating teams in this country. Peñarol play their home games at the Campeón del Siglo Stadium, which can seat 40,000 fans.
Peñarol is one of the most successful teams in Uruguay, having been crowned over 50 times as Uruguayan champions. The club has also enjoyed success in the Apertura and Clausura editions of Uruguay’s top flight, while also winning Supercopa Uruguaya titles among many other domestic accolades. In continental football, Peñarol has also established itself as a dominant force by winning different editions of the Copa Libertadores and the Copa Intercontinental. To top it all, Los Carboneros were named the Best South American club from the 20th Century in 2009.
The yellow and black club is known for its intense rivalry against Nacional, which is often referred to as the Clásico Uruguayo. This is one of the oldest rivalries in football, as the first game between Nacional and the then-called CURCC took place in 1900. Since then, Nacional and Peñarol have faced each other over 500 times across all competitions. To make things even more intense between these clubs, both sides are constantly fighting to become the most-winning team in Uruguayan football.
Peñarol is not owned by a major company, leaving their associates (carrying card members) to decide which direction the team will take. Elections are held every three years to choose a new president, although a president can extend his term if there are no other candidates for the position. The club’s website offers updates for all the team’s categories, with game highlights and news being added to keep fans up to date on their favorite club’s activities.
