A resurgent Crystal Palace side will take on Manchester United at the Selhurst Park on Saturday, the 22nd of February in a Premier League encounter.

Preview: Eagles hopeful of continuing good run

Palace have performed admirably under manager Tony Pulis having lost just once at home under the management of the Welsh international. The Eagles have also won three of their last four Premier League games with the only defeat coming at the hands of second placed Arsenal.

Their antics have allowed them to climb to the 15th spot in the table and Pulis’ men will be hoping to distance themselves from the relegation zone with another three points on Saturday.

Crystal Palace however have history against them having not won a league encounter against the defending English champions in 23 years. Last time the Eagles got the better of the Red Devils was back in 1991, since then Palace have lost nine and drawn two of the 11 meetings between the two sides. Manager Tony Pulis has also never managed to notch a victory over Man United but Saturday’s fixture might be his best shot at doing so.

The current campaign has been nothing short of abysmal for Man United fans who after watching their team lift the league trophy for the 20th time last season have produced a series of below par performances and are currently seventh in the league table.

United are currently winless in their last three Premier League games and have won just twice in their last six matches. The Red Devils are two points behind Palace in the form guide who have managed three victories in their last six games. Furthermore United have not managed an away win in their last three fixtures and will be hoping to bring an end to the streak against a Crystal Palace side which has shown resilience at home.

However the Man United camp is expected to be in a buoyant mood following Wayne Rooney’s contract extension at the club. The Englishman was poised to seek a move away from the club in the summer but has now committed himself to the club for the next five years. The former Everton man revealed his delight after signing the contract and reiterated that Manchester United remains one of the best clubs in the world despite their current league position.

“The future is bright for Manchester United,” Rooney said.

“This is still one of the world’s leading clubs. We have seen this with the signing of Juan Mata in January.

“People have been saying that we may have trouble attracting the world’s best players but I think the fact Mata came here shows this isn’t true.

“This is a new era for the club, we have a newmanagement team and a great new manager in David Moyes.

“We have some great players and despite our recent form everyone has stuck together and the team spirit is good. We will continue to work hard and get Manchester United to the top where it belongs.”

However it is imperative that United’s talismanic striker improves his performances on the field if the Red Devils are to achieve anything this season. The 28 year old has not scored or assisted in his last five matches which is his longest run since 2011.

It will be interesting to see what team David Moyes’ chooses to field on Saturday, with the Scot international having not named the same starting eleven for any two competitive games. United are also set to go against Olympiakos in a Champions League Round of 16 clash on Tuesday and Moyes might choose to rest some of his players for the important match.

The Red Devils are set to be without striker Danny Welbeck (Knee), defenders Rafael (Concussion) and Johnny Evans (Calf) as well as winger Nani (Hamstring). Phil Jones could make a return to the squad after suffering a concussion during United’s 2-1 loss to Stoke.

Tony Pulis will have an almost full fit squad to choose from with the exception of winger Jerome Thomas who might miss the match due to a back injury.

Last time the two sides met, Palace suffered a 2-0 defeat at the Old Trafford after Kagisho Dikgacoi was controversially sent off for a tackle on Ashley Young with the foul resulting in a penalty for the Red Devils.
