Memphis Depay's first season with Manchester United has been rather disappointing. The Dutch International has fallen down Louis Van Gaal's pecking order, and Sunday's miscalculated pass against Chelsea led to the Blues' equalizer, which infuriated Red Devils' fans. Nevertheless, Depay's mistake was something usual in football, according to Man United's captain Wayne Rooney.
"Memphis is a fantastic player and that happens, we all give bad passes away. A lot of things happened from when you give the ball away to when they've scored the goal, so I don't think we can stand here and blame Memphis," stated Rooney to the Manchester Evening News.
The 30-year-old captain believes that Manchester United needs to support their performances with points added to their tally, trying to avoid losing points when games are almost over.
"I thought it was a good performance, I thought we played some nice stuff, it feels like a defeat in the end. We've performed well and played some good stuff again but, overall, it's at this stage of the season that results matter and now we've dropped two points," the player added.
Rooney has improved his goal scoring tally recently, but fans expect more from their captain.
Rooney also added that defending Chelsea was no easy task, considering the Blues tried to level the game with no defined strategy.
"They pushed players up front and they didn't really play with any system, so it's difficult to work out how to defend against them,” Rooney concluded.
