For Bayern, this match might finally provide a real test, a test which was supposed to come in midweek. Whether one agrees with the referee's decision or not, when a team as strong as Bayern plays against ten man opposition in the UEFA Champions League, they are bound to come out on top rather easily. This was exactly the case in the Allianz Arena on Wednesday as Bayern battered Shakhtar 7-0. Things were not so easy to begin with. Although Thomas Müller converted from the spot in the fourth minute, the Ukrainian side defended bravely and Bayern could not find a second early. Once the second goal came, courtesy of Jerome Boateng who struck in the Champions League for the second time, the floodgates opened. Franck Ribery, excellent on the night, added a third. Robert Lewandowski, Mario Götze and even Holger Badstuber got on the score sheet.
Somewhat unfortunately though, Arjen Robben and Ribery were both injured in that match. Manuel Neuer is not traveling to Bremen either. Without their expert wingers, Bayern are a little short of creativity. Xabi Alonso will not return for this one as he is suspended; he was suspended in midweek in the UEFA Champions League. Melvyn Lorenzen, Alejandro Galvez, Franco Di Santo, Marnon Busch and Assani Lukimya are all out for the home side. Bremen has been making waves under Viktor Skripnik. The team have found their lost soul and are attacking their way through the table. They are eighth in the table, having picked up four wins, one draw and one loss in their last four. This form is worthy of a European place rather than a relegation spot.
