Another round of games in Serie A is now completed as matchday seven came to its conclusion on Sunday. Reigning Scudetto champs AC Milan were in action against Napoli, while 2021 winners Inter took on Udinese. Additional Sunday matches included Roma versus Atalanta and Juventus vs Monza.
On paper, three of these games seemed pretty straightforward, with many expecting the Nerazzurri to defeat the Zebrette, while Roma were anticipated to at least get something out of their clash with Atalanta. As for Juventus, the Bianconeri were desperate to get back to winning ways after a shock loss to Benfica midweek during the Champions League.
However, things did not turn out as planned. Juventus suffered a surprise 1-0 reversal to newly promoted Monza, which means they have won just two of their last nine across all comps.
In addition, Inter were on the wrong end of a 3-1 score line against an Udinese side who really have surprised everyone so far this season. That win for the Zebrette makes it a fifth on the spin and has helped them to climb into third spot.
Meanwhile, Roma were quite unfortunate to lose to Atalanta, during which their opponents grabbed a goal and pretty much parked the bus for the rest of the match. Jose Mourinho allowed his frustration to get the better of him, which resulted in the decorated tactician being sent off.
And finally, Milan's long-standing unbeaten run came to an end at the hands of Napoli, who defeated the Rossoneri 2-1 to make it a first loss in Serie A since January.
The four defeats also set a rather unwanted precedent, as it is the first time in nearly 70 years that Milan, Inter, Roma, and Juventus have all lost a match during the same round.
Indeed, the last time this happened was well before any of the current players, most of their managers, and quite a few calcio followers were even born: February 13, 1955.
Suffice it to say, all four sides will be looking forward to better results when they all resume action following the international break.
