About
CNBC history, coverage, features
CNBC, originally known as the Consumer News and Business Channel, is an American English-language television channel owned by Comcast’s NBCUniversal. It was established in April 1989 as a joint venture between Cablevision and NBC, with NBC acquiring Cablevision's stake after CNBC's merger with the Financial News Network (FNN) in May 1991.Primarily a business news channel, CNBC delivers a range of content, including business, financial, and trading news, as well as documentaries and more. Additionally, thanks to NBC Sports, the channel occasionally broadcasts live sports events, serving as an overflow channel for its sister network.
One of the significant sporting events featured on CNBC is the English Premier League, for which NBC Sports acquired exclusive U.S. broadcast rights for the 2013-14 season. The network secured a six-year rights extension for the 2022-23 to 2027-28 cycle for over $2.7 billion, and while NBCUniversal’s USA Network and Peacock have been the primary broadcasters of the English top-flight, CNBC has also provided coverage of select fixtures.
This includes supplementary coverage of Championship Sunday, the final round of each Premier League season, where all ten matches kick off simultaneously. Coverage ranges from pre-game shows to live match broadcasts.
The Premier League is not the only major English soccer competition aired by CNBC. During the 2020-21 season, the channel broadcast ten Women’s Super League matches. CNBC has also supported NBC’s coverage of the Olympic Games, including six consecutive editions from 2000 to 2020, with a focus on boxing and other sports.
In addition to soccer, CNBC has aired major American sports, including post-game analysis of Major League Baseball (MLB). The channel has also covered the NBA Playoffs and the NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs in partnership with NBC. Other sports featured on the network include college football, Formula 1, NASCAR, and the Six Nations Championship.
CNBC, which broadcasts in 1080i HDTV quality, has been accessible through most major cable, satellite, and streaming TV providers in the USA, including Dish, DIRECTV, Spectrum, Xfinity, fuboTV, Hulu + Live TV, and DirecTV Stream. Additionally, CNBC offers its own subscription-based streaming service, CNBC+, which is available via cnbc.com, as well as iOS and Android mobile apps, Apple TV, and Roku TV.
