Chile come into this historic tournament as the defending champions, something that gives them an edge over their opponents. The South Americans are expected to provide stiff competition in the fight for the title and hopefully, defend it successfully. But first things first, here is a quick look at their profile.
Chile’ Copa America history
The Chileans first participated in the Copa America in 1916 when they finished fourth after losing two games and drawing one out of three. The South Americans finished fourth four consecutive times in 1916, 1917, 1919 and 1920. Throughout those four years, they had not won a match in the competition, and had registered only two draws. The rest were defeats. In 1921, they withdrew from the tournament due to internal problems with the team, then reappeared in 1922 and finished fifth. They again withdrew in 1923 and reappeared in 1924 to claim the fourth spot.
Slowly but surely, La Roja started improving in the tournament and finally won their first-ever Copa America title in 2015 when they beat rivals Argentina in the finals. In total, the Chileans have won one Copa America title, played 68 matches, won 27, drawn 14, won 27, scored 99 goals, and conceded 80 in their history.
Recent form
In 2015, the Chileans played a total of 14 international matches, including friendlies. Out of the 14, they won eight times, lost thrice and drew thrice. Their biggest victory was 5-0 against Bolivia in Santiago Chile in the Copa America tournament played on June 19.
In 2016, the defending champions have only played two competitive international matches, won one and lost one. They lost 2-1 to rivals Argentina in their 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers on March 24, and then beat Venezuela 4-1 on March 29 in the same tournament. Before playing their opening game against Argentina on June 6 in the Copa America Centenario, they will host Jamaica and then visit Mexico for international friendlies.
Manager’s profile
The Chilean national football team is managed by former Spain international striker Juan Antonio Pizzi Torroja. The ex-Barcelona forward spend two seasons at the Nou Camp and scored 11 league goals. He won the Spanish Supercup in 1996, Copa del Rey in 1997 and the UEFA Super Cup. Internationally, he made 22 caps for Spain, and scored eight goals in the process. He was named the head coach of Chile on January 29, 2016 as Jorge Sampaoli’s replacement, and will be looking to walk in the footsteps of his predecessor on his debut as he guides the South American giants to yet another Copa America title.

Terrestrial broadcaster Canal 13, along with cable and satellite TV giant Fox Sports, will telecast Copa America matches in Chile. Satellite broadcaster DirecTV will also carry all 32 matches live on TV on its platform via DirecTV Sports in Chile, while offering mobile and online live streaming on DirecTV Play.
