After having one of his least impressive seasons with Barca, Messi will be expected to achieve greatness in Brazil.

It is no secret that Argentina has produced some of football’s most renowned legends, such as Diego Armando Maradona and Lionel Messi. However, la Seleccion has failed to win any silverware in recent years, despite all the talents that have appeared on the famous national team.

Today, Argentina began training at Ezeiza, to prepare for the World Cup and the upcoming friendlies against Trinidad and Tobago on Wednesday, and Slovenia on Friday. Meanwhile, Tevez, not included in the list, is taking a much needed rest in Miami with his family.

Much is expected from la Albiceleste, but a lot more is expected from the little talisman, Lionel Messi. In fact, although the four-time Balon d’Or winner has conquered everything there is to win at a club-level, he failed to win anything with his national team.

No player before Messi has ever won 4 Balon d'Ors

Though expectations should be high with players of Messi’s caliber, arguably the best center-forward who ever lived, Barcelona’s number 10 cannot do everything by himself. Recent years have showed how soccer has evolved to the highest level ever. For today’s standards, it is impossible for one player to carry a team on his shoulder, thus a comparison between Messi and his predecessor Maradona are misplaced at best.

Accordingly, Sabella warns that Argentina’s captain cannot do everything by himself and he needs his team’s support and assistance. With Aguero in spectacular form and Di Maria having delivered an entire season of incredible performances, Mess is surely not alone. The Argentinian manager stated:

“There is a team which must help Messi. We cannot put all the responsibility on his shoulders. He is happy. He feels sheltered by his teammates.”

There is no doubt this World Cup campaign will be a different one for Argentina, which should reach the quarterfinals without too many problems.
