Preview

Arsenal are gearing up for their final game of the Premier League season, with the Gunners hosting Everton on Matchweek 38 this Sunday. However, while the Toffees have avoided relegation and have thus achieved their major goal of the campaign, the Gunners are still fighting for the title and could end their 20-year wait this weekend.

Arteta's men enter the season finale sitting two points behind current leaders and reigning champions Manchester City. Saka and Co. were top of the table when the weekend ended but were dethroned once the Cityzens visited Tottenham in their game in hand, beating Spurs 2-0.

Fortunately for the North London giants, they currently have a superior goal difference than Guardiola's side. As a result, Arsenal boast a credible chance of lifting the title.

The Gunners simply need two things to occur: they need to beat Everton in their final game and will also require Manchester City to drop points in their interesting showdown with West Ham. Irrespective of whether Haaland and Co. draw or lose at home to the Hammers, Arsenal will beat them to the title if City drop points and Arteta's men win.

But can Arsenal fans reasonably expect West Ham to nick a point – or all three – off of the reigning Premier League champions? This is tricky, but all the players can do is win their game and hope for the best.

Form favors the host, with the North London outfit losing only one league game this calendar year. Additionally, Arsenal have won all but two of their top-flight fixtures in 2024, recording 15 victories out of 17 matches, scoring a whopping 52 goals, and conceding only eight.

Additionally, the title contenders enter this game on the back of a five-game winning streak, with their most recent fixture being the crucial 1-0 win away to Manchester United in the league. That was the Gunners' second win at Old Trafford in their last 17 league visits to the iconic ground.

And that's not all. Saka and Co. also beat Bournemouth, Chelsea, and Wolves during this run while securing a narrow 3-2 victory at Tottenham. However, unlike in those other fixtures, winning is only half of the story. Sadly for Arsenal, the other half is not in their hands.

Meanwhile, while the hosts enter this tie fighting for the title, Everton head to the Emirates Stadium with their main objective for the season accomplished. That is Premier League survival, with Sean Dyche's men sitting 15th in the table with 40 points.

The Toffees can finish no lower than 16th in the table, with Brentford sitting only a point behind. This is an amazing feat for a club that was docked eight points in total after breaching the league's financial rules – they were initially hit with a 10-point deduction, which was later reduced to six on appeal before an additional two were deducted.

This comes courtesy of a five-game unbeaten run from the Merseyside outfit, with the Toffees winning all but one of those matches, beating Sheffield, Nottingham Forest, Brentford, and – most importantly – Liverpool.

Despite this, Everton's away form has been abysmal, with Dyche's men failing to win any of their last 10 matches on the road. Furthermore, the visitors have struggled against Arsenal recently and should thus desire revenge.

It was just over a year ago when Dyche's men beat the Gunners 1-0 in his debut for the Toffees. However, these two sides have met twice, with the Merseyside club losing on both occasions, first being beaten 4-0 before losing 1-0 at Goodison Park earlier this campaign.

Team news

Arsenal: The Gunners have a fully-fit squad but the question remains whether Jurrien Timber will make his much-awaited return after suffering a serious knee injury in the opening round. Leandro Trossard, who scored the decisive goal against Everton when they met earlier this season, is expected to join Havertz and Saka in attack. Meanwhile, Thomas  Partey will be hoping to start what may potentially be his final game for the club.

Everton: Andre Gomes is a doubt for this game while Dele Alli, Vitaliy Mykolenko, Jack Harrison, and Nathan Patterson are all unavailable.
