Preview

All eyes will be on Sunday's Emirates Stadium showdown. Arsenal, the team that pushed Manchester City all the way in last season's title race before ultimately crumbling towards the end, host the reigning champions of England in what many expect to be a thrilling encounter.

The Gunners welcome their rivals to North London with the sole aim of ending their long wait for a Premier League win over the Cityzens. While Mikel Arteta has beaten his former team in the FA Cup and more recently in the Community Shield, the Spaniard is yet to pick up even a single point against Guardiola's side in the English top flight.

And this run stretches beyond his time with Arsenal. In fact, the last Gunners boss to beat the Abu Dhabi-owned club was Arsene Wenger, and that came before Guardiola arrived in Manchester. Long story short, it is about time the North London giants beat the English champions.

Last season, Saka and Co. infamously led the table for most of the campaign before ultimately letting the title slip away after dropping points in six of their last nine games of the season. Furthermore, Arteta's side were taught a lesson by Manchester City both home and away, losing 3-1 at the Emirates Stadium before being embarrassed 4-1 at the Etihad Stadium.

Arsenal missed out on the title by five points, meaning those defeats proved crucial in the title race. The Gunners cannot let this hoodoo run but their recent displays show that they are still a work in progress.

The home side enter this clash on the back of their 2-1 loss away to Lens in the UEFA Champions League, having drawn 2-2 at home to Tottenham not too long before that. In both fixtures, Arteta's men made errors at the back and were without ideas going forward, leaving fans fretting over Sunday's upcoming showdown.

Manchester City, on the other hand, enter this tie on the back of a confidence-boosting 3-1 victory over RB Leipzig in the UEFA Champions League. Goals from Phil Foden, Julian Alvarez, and the impressive summer signing Jeremy Doku secured the three points ahead of their crucial trip to the capital.

Guardiola's men already lead the table and are seen as the clear favorites to win the Premier League title again. However, the losses of Ilkay Gundogan and Riyad Mahrez, as well as the recent injuries to key players — more on that later — have made the Cityzens more vulnerable.

In fact, the Premier League champions enter this tie on the back of an English top-flight defeat, having lost 2-1 away to Wolves last weekend. A few days prior to that, Guardiola's men lost 1-0 to Newcastle to bow out of the Carabao Cup, meaning the Manchester giants have suffered more defeats this season than Arsenal.

With the international break fast approaching, Haaland and Co. can secure their spot at the top until late October with a win at the Emirates Stadium. The Cityzens are a point ahead of Arsenal but have been temporarily leapfrogged by Tottenham at the top of the table. Additionally, they have scored more goals and conceded fewer times than their upcoming opponent, thus making them the favorites to win this game.

Team news

Arsenal: Jurrien Timber is the only guaranteed absentee after suffering a major knee injury on Matchday 1. However, the Gunners have several other concerns, namely Bukayo Saka, who limped off the pitch in the 2-1 loss to Lens. The Englishman will reportedly be fine for this tie, which is a huge boost, but question marks linger over Gabriel Martinelli. Thomas Partey, on the other hand, will be in the squad but it remains unclear whether he can start.

Manchester City: Kevin de Bruyne is unavailable due to a severe hamstring injury he suffered in the opening game of the season. Likewise, Guardiola will be without Rodri as he is seeing out the last of his three-game suspension. Pep has also ruled out John Stones for this tie. It will be interesting to see whether Kalvin Phillips is given a go or whether the manager will opt for a Kovacic-Nunez double pivot.
