It was a night of records at Old Trafford as Manchester United completely battered Southampton to go joint-top with rivals Manchester City in Tuesday's Premier League encounter. The Red Devils were rampant from start to finish, putting nine goals past the Saints to match the biggest-ever win record in the league's history.
It was always going to be a long night for Ralph Hassenhutl's men who were reduced to 10 inside the first two minutes following Alex Jankiewicz's sending off. The 19-year-old defender became the fourth player in the Premier League's history to be shown a red card in under two minutes after his horror tackle on Scott McTominay.
16 minutes after his exit, Aaron Wan-Bissaka opened the scoring for Manchester United by hitting a low shot, having met Luke Shaw's cross at the back post. The lead was then doubled to two by Marcus Rashford in the 25th minute. The 22-year-old forward practically sealed the deal for the Red Devils after his cross was turned home by Jan Bednarek for an own-goal in the 34th minute. Five minutes later, Edinson Cavani got on the scoresheet by nodding home Luke Shaw's cross to extend the host's advantage to four ahead of the half-time break.
The pair were then replaced ahead of the second half by Donny van de Beek and Anthony Martial. The latter, who had come under massive scrutiny in recent months proved his worth by scoring twice before causing a penalty which was subsequently converted by Bruno Fernandes. Jan Bednarek was responsible for bringing down the Frenchman in the penalty box and the Polish defender was shown a second yellow, reducing Southampton to nine-men.
In-between, Scott Mctominay smashed home for his third goal of the season. Daniel James, who came on for Marcus Rashford in the 60th-minute, added the finishing gloss with the ninth goal and final goal.
