England reign supreme in their qualifying group having picked up three wins from three games. While not always convincing, England has made sure that they get by in the manner in which they have done so in recent years. A hard fought opening day victory over Switzerland set the tone for the campaign. Danny Welbeck, in good form following his move to Arsenal from Manchester United, struck twice, handing England a 0-2 win. Welbeck's goals did not come early on. His first strike came close to the hour mark while the second came in injury time, when Switzerland were chasing the match.
Their second match was up against minnows San Marino, a team with a well known habit of shipping a hatful of goals. Indeed, England happily put five past them. Phil Jagielka, a rather unlikely source, opened the scoring for them. Wayne Rooney struck from the penalty spot just before halftime. Danny Welbeck scored his third goal of the qualifiers just after half time. Andros Townsend scored the fourth. San Marino player Alessandro Della Valle unfortunately sent the ball into his own net shortly after to round off the scoring.
The English could not repeat those feats in their next qualifier against Estonia; once again, they simply managed to get the job done. A Wayne Rooney strike in the 74th minute guaranteed them three points in a crucial match. Their next opponents are Slovenia, the team lying just behind them in their qualification group. Slovenia started their qualifiers with a loss against Estonia but managed to record a very surprising victory over the Swiss. Two Milivoje Novakovic strikes saw them beat Lithuania away from home, 0-2.
Slovenia have shown that they have the spirit needed to suffer for long periods but strike at the right time to take points.
