Preview: The first of three games without Ronaldo

Carlo Ancelotti has enough talent at his disposal and may not struggle in the absence of red-carded Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portuguese’s role is expected to be taken by flamboyant starlet Jese and returning winger Gareth Bale. 

Meanwhile, Di Maria and Modric are set to keep their spots in the starting XI after impressing the Santiago Bernabeu crowd during Real Madrid’s remarkable 3-0 win against Atletico Madrid in the Copa del Rey in midweek. 

After making a huge step towards reaching the final of the Spanish Cup, Los Blancos can concentrate on getting back on track in La Liga. Last weekend’s 1-1 draw against Athletic Bilbao in San Mames prevented them from ending Matchday 22 above league champions Barcelona. With the Catalans playing on Sunday only, Los Blancos will have the opportunity to finally make that happen – at least, temporarily. 

However, Villarreal are feeling confident following their 3-1 victory over Osasuna on Monday. The Yellow Submarine, who held Real Madrid to a 2-2 draw at El Madrigal in September 2013, will want to become the second team after Barca to deny the Santiago Bernabeu's home supporters from celebrating a league win this season.

Villarreal are fiercely contending against Athletic Bilbao for a Top Four finish as they aim to return to the UEFA Champions League.
