Last season's runners-up Liverpool will try to do it all again as they face a tough home test against PSG on matchday one at Anfield on Tuesday, September 18th.

Match Preview

Last season saw Liverpool make it all the way to the final, only to suffer heartbreak as Real Madrid made history by winning the Champions League for the third straight time. For Reds supporters, though, their team's loss was not without controversy, as talismanic star Mohamed Salah went off injured early on following a tussle with Sergio Ramos for the ball, with some still musing if the Spaniard's reputation for being too aggressive meant that there was some malice behind his actions.

In any case, Liverpool have been placed into a tricky quartet with both Ligue 1 champions PSG and Serie A runners-up Napoli for company. Arguably, the only comfortable opponent  for Jurgen Klopp's side seem to be Red Star Belgrade, but certainly, the Reds will not be taking the Serbian champions lightly, either.

First up, of course, will be PSG. Like Liverpool, Les Parisiens have been cruising along comfortably domestically, where they also have won their last five league fixtures to sit on top of the table. However, they have a poor record in England, where they have won just one game. That was a 2-1 success versus Chelsea in the 2015/16 UEFA Champions League round of 16 second leg, and overall, they have failed to win their last three games against Premier League opposition.

By contrast, Liverpool have won their last two games at Anfield against French sides and their home record overall is quite formidable. The last team to beat the Reds here? None other than current Champions League title-holders Real Madrid, and that was nearly four years ago in October 2014.

In terms of personnel, the visitors will not have Gianluigi Buffon available due to suspension following his angry outburst after he felt Juventus were controversially eliminated from the Champions League against Real Madrid last term. That ban carries over despite his move to PSG this summer, but he is still expected to travel with Thomas Tuchel's squad nonetheless. Marco Verratti is another who serves yet another ban, but unlike his Italian colleague has not made the trip, and Dani Alves also misses out.

As for Liverpool, Roberto Firmino is a major doubt after suffering an eye injury during his team's 2-1 win over Tottenham last weekend. Should the Brazilian star fail to feature, Daniel Sturridge, who has only made a handful of substitute appearances, would likely be his replacement in the starting XI.
