The most highly-anticipated wedding in football has finally happened – Lionel Messi has married childhood sweetheart Antonella Roccuzzo in his hometown.
Dubbed “the wedding of the century” in Argentina, the Barcelona superstar tied the knot with his long-term partner – and mother of his two child – at a luxury hotel in a civil ceremony.
The wedding was held in Rosario in front of over 250 guests. The couple became man and wife in front of a long list of legends and football greats.
It was previously revealed that the five-time Ballon d’Or winner only wanted close friends to attend the ceremony. Not all of his team-mates – past and present – were invited, but the likes of Luis Suarez, Neymar, Sergio Busquest, and Jordi Alba were at hand for La Pulga’s special day.
Former team-mates Xavi, Carles Puyol, Samuel Eto’o, and Cesc Fabregas also made the trip for Messi’s wedding. They were joined with Leo’s national team buddies Angel Di Maria, Sergio Aguero, Ezequiel Lavezzi, and Javier Mascherano.
During the duration of the wedding, the entire area was sealed off from the public. Nonetheless, Messi and his wife Antonella posed for pictures on a red carpet for fans and photographers. The newly-wedded couple will now enjoy their honeymoon before the Blaugrana attacker rejoins the Catalan giants for the pre-season.
