What started out as a dream may end up being a disappointing moment for Atlético Chapecoense.
The Brazilian side that gained world-wide attention after their plane crashed during a trip to Colombia entered the 2017 Copa Libertadores with a host of new players. Their run in the competition kicked off with a bang, as they won their first match against Zulia. Nevertheless, a misunderstanding with CONMEBOL's authorities could end up watching the team being eliminated.
Prior to their clash against Lanús, one of Chape's players was sent off, being slapped with a three-match ban. That player was Luiz Otavio, who ended up playing against the Argentineans and eventually scored the game-winning goal. Chapecoense's execs claim that CONMEBOL never informed them that Luiz Otavio wasn't allowed to play, which is being used by Lanus' president, Nicolas Russo, to force the Brazilian team out of the competition.
Lanús is set to face Uruguayan side Nacional during Group 7's Matchday 6, while Chapecoense will clash against Zulia. If the 2-1 result from the game between Lanús and Chapecoense isn't changed, the Brazilians will be in prime position to make it to the KO stage. If Lanus has things going their way, then the Argentineans will make it to the final round by securing a draw during their trip to Uruguay.
Following the fatal crash that killed 19 of Chapecoense's players, the team's reconstruction involved signing a new coach and having more than 20 new players arriving. Neto and Alan Ruschel are the only players that survived the crash that are still part of Chape's squad. Neither of them has featured in any games this season, as the team is waiting for them to be fully recovered.
