On Tuesday, Cristiano Ronaldo etched him name alongside the world’s best international goalscorers. The Portuguese captain reached this feat after scoring in their clash with Sweden.
The 32-year-old, who returned to his home town Madeira for this friendly, scored the opening goal. That strike took his international goals tally to 71.
This means the Real Madrid superstar entered the prestigious top-ten list all-time top international goalscorers. The three-time Ballon d’Or winner moved into ninth place in his 138th appearance for the national side, level with Majed Abdullah of Saudi Arabia, Kiatisuk Senamuang of Thailand and Miroslav Klose of Germany.
Cristiano needs 39 more goals to become the undisputed number one, but until then, Ali Daei’s tally of 109 goals in 149 caps for Iran remains the number to beat.
Ronaldo also achieved another similar feat. In the list of all-time top European scorers in international games, the Euro 2016 winner is in third – level with Klose – behind only Hungarian legends Ferenc Puskas (84), and Sandor Kocsis (75).
