Match facts and other historical stats - Marseille vs. Lorient

  • Marseille and Lorient have met 24 times since October 1998
  • L'OM have won 11, Les Merlus six, and the other seven matches have finished as draws
  • Lorient defeated Marseille in an eight-goal thriller (5-3) on April 24, 2015

Team news

Marseille

Not too long ago, Marseille were regarded as one of the top sides in France. Unfortunately, last season was one to forget for L'OM fans as the team finished in a very disappointing 13th spot and as such, will not be featuring in European competition for the current term. This season, they will have to make do without the talent of Michy Batshuayi, who scored 17 in the league and 23 across all competitions after his move to Chelsea. And given the fact that they've scored just one goal in their first two games - courtesy of a consolation effort from midfielder Florian Thauvin -  Marseille's supporters will be expecting to see the team's floundering attack get up and running this weekend.

With new owners set to take over, coupled with the potential return of Marcelo Bielsa after his rather abrupt departure, could this be the start of things improving for the struggling giants?

Lorient

Meanwhile, Lorient have also had a poor start to this season. Sylvain Ripoll's side not only have lost their first two games, but have also conceded a whopping six already. In addition, les Merlus appear to be having a problem with discipline as they had not one, but two men sent off during their 3-0 loss to Bastia last weekend. So far, Cameroonian attacker Benjamin Moukandjo, who was the team's top marksman with 12 league goals, has opened his account (a brace on matchday one), but more will be expected of him as Lorient look to earn their first point - or three - of the nascent campaign.

  • Les Parisiens, meanwhile, have won 11, whilst the other 14 matches finished as draws
  • The last time Monaco won both home and away in Ligue 1 vs. PSG was during the 2009/2010 season
  • PSG last beat Monaco both on the road and at home in Ligue 1 action during the 2006/2007 campaign

Team news

Monaco

Monaco will be coming into this game full of confidence after wrapping up their Champions League play-offs tie with a win over Villarreal. The result, which saw Les Rouges-et-Blancs beat the Yellow Submarine 3-1 on aggregate, now guarantees them a spot in the group stages, where they will take on high-flying Tottenham, tricky Bayer Leverkusen, and Russian outfit CSKA Moscow in their quartet. They will join fellow Ligue 1 sides PSG and Lyon as France's representatives in Europe's premier club competition.

In terms of Ligue 1, Monaco started this term off with a 2-2 draw against Guingamp before grinding out a 1-0 win over Nantes. Currently on four points, the hosts will be hoping to match their result from March this year and defeat Les Parisiens for the second time in just five months. Should they manage to do so, they will head into this round top of the table until the other sides take to the pitch on Saturday and Sunday.

PSG

Two games, two wins. Four goals scored, and zero conceded. It's been so far, so good for PSG under new coach Unai Emery, who took over following Laurent Blanc's departure earlier this summer. Although Les Parisiens no longer can count on talismanic attacker Zlatan Ibrahimovic to fire in the goals, they nonetheless have been efficiently going about business to start their title defense off on the right footing.

However, with Edinson Cavani still yet to open his account, much of the goal-scoring responsibilities have been spread around among the squad. In fact, Layvin Kurzawa, who plies his trade as a left-back, is currently the team's top goal-scorer with his first goal being the deciding factor in their victory over Bastia on opening day. The last meeting between PSG and Monaco resulted as a win for Friday's hosts, and Les Parisiens will be loath to lose to their bitter rivals twice in a row - especially at the start of this new season.
