After La Roja had failed to beat Croatia in their final group stage match of UEFA Euro 2016, they carved a very difficult path for themselves. Spain met up with the Italians in the round of 16, hoping to make a statement against Antonio Conte's men after they were criticized for their loss against Rakitic and Co. However, it did not end well for Vicente del Bosque's crew.
The thrilling win for the Azzurri has sent the double European champions back home with many surprised at the Spaniard's early exit from the competition.
Speaking at the post-match press conference, Spain ace Andres Iniesta expressed his regret saying,
"I don’t have many words. It’s a disappointment that we have to accept. They were more effective on specific occasions and overcame us.
“Spain were too concerned about what [Italy] were doing and these situations penalized us. In the second half, we went for them and it was different, but we were wrong [in our approach] in the first half.”
However, the influential midfielder insisted his side did not lack enthusiasm heading into the game.
"We were excited, and the sensations were good.
"[Winning the trophy again] was a dream we all had, the team and the fans felt that could happen at the start of the tournament. But we must accept this disappointment and move on."
