Danny Welbeck’s unexpected injury has handed Roy Hodgson a curve ball, with the squad expected to be named on Monday.

With squad announcements slowly rolling out for the upcoming Euro 2016 tournament, Roy Hodgson is expected to name his team on Monday, having delayed his decision after being rocked by the unexpected injury to Danny Welbeck.

The Arsenal striker was diagnosed with “significant cartilage damage” after suffering a knee injury, having played a pivotal role for the Gunners upon his return in January, but will miss out on a ticket to France due to his nine-month lay-off.

As a result, The Mirror claim that the Three Lions boss is contemplating whether to name a fifth striker or another wide player, with the British publication claiming that Hodgson could hand Jermain Defoe a national team call-up.

The Sunderland striker has not featured for England since November 2013, but could be on his way to a return to a surprise national outfit return after scoring an impressive 15 goals in 2015/16 to help the Black Cats avoid relegation this season.

Manchester United starlet Marcus Rashford, who at the age of 18 has enjoyed a meteoric rise to fame with the Red Devils this term, is expected to be invited to train with the senior squad, but the Mirror write that Roy Hodgson is unlikely to give him a nod for the Euros.

Hodgson could be in north London for Arsenal’s final game of the season to review the fitness of Jack Wilshere, a player who could be handed a start in England’s first game vs. Russia. However, Theo Walcott is in danger of being axed after his disappointing season and lack of games.

Jamie Vardy has all but cemented his spot in the England squad after guiding Leicester City to a remarkable English Premier League title, but unfortunately the same can’t be said for team-mate Danny Drinkwater, who is expected to only be chosen as a standby player.
