Without sounding cliche, today's game appears to be a clear-cut case of David vs. Goliath. On one side will be Vianense, a team that might be familiar to some Portuguese football supporters, but certainly will not to the larger football fan-base. The hosts, currently coached by Rogério Brito presently ply their trade in the fourth tier of Portuguese football and have never featured in the Primeira Liga.
In fact, their highest ever place was the third division, but following their relegation at the end of the 2009/2010 season, they have not been able to make it back up the football ladder and they do not look to be in for an easy time at their home ground, which seats only 3,000 spectators.
Meanwhile, Benfica, who set a record by winning their 34th Primeira Liga title last May, are also the record holders of the Taca de Portugal trophy. The Eagles have won it 25 times, but the last time they were crowned victors was during the 2013/2014 season. Not surprisingly, though, between them and fellow "Big 3" members Sporting and Porto, they have lifted the trophy on 57 out of the 75 times this competition has been contested.
Naturally, they are by far the huge favorites to cruise to an easy win in this third-round contest and new coach Rui Vitoria could opt to rest some key players, especially with an eye on their UCL clash with Galatasaray and big league game versus Sporting coming up next week.
So although it looks like a straightforward win for the visitors, there have been quite a few upsets in this tournament's history. Could Vianense be the latest to pull one off against their highly esteemed opponents? Or will Benfica make mincemeat of the minnows as they prepare to resume European action next week?
