Associazione Sportiva Roma (AS Roma), simply known as Roma, is an Italian professional football club based in Rome. The team, nicknamed “I Giallorossi” or “I Lupi” by its fans, was founded in June 1927. Roma plays all its home games at the Stadio Olimpico, a venue that opened in 1953 and seats 70,634 in its current format. Unlike many other major teams, Roma shares its home stadium with cross-town rivals Lazio - a practice that is quite common in Italy but not elsewhere in Europe.
Although Roma has not enjoyed the same level of success as other teams in Italy, namely AC Milan, Inter Milan, and Juventus, nonetheless, the team has won several titles both domestically and in Europe. Notably, the Giallorossi won the inaugural edition of the UEFA Europa Conference League during the 2021-22 season.
Roma’s biggest rival is arguably fellow Rome-based club Lazio. Derbies between Roma and Lazio are called the Derby della Capitale (The Rome Derby) and are always eagerly anticipated and hotly-contested affairs. Napoli is another major rival of Roma’s and plays against the Giallorossi in the Derby del Sole (The Derby of the Sun).
Roma is currently mostly owned by an American-based company, The Friedkin Group, with the company’s CEO, Dan Friedkin, serving as chairman since 2020.
The club’s official streaming channel is Roma TV+, a subscription-based service that provides on-demand streaming coverage of Roma’s Serie A, Coppa Italia, and European ties (assuming the team is playing in any European competition during that season).
