About Supercopa de Catalunya
Supercopa de Catalunya History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage
Supercopa de Catalunya is a football competition established and organized by the Catalan Football Federation. This tournament was inaugurated in 2014 and is a one-off match exclusive to clubs from the autonomous region of Catalonia.
This competition sees the two highest-ranked Catalan clubs in La Liga face off. The very-first Supercopa de Catalunya took place on 29 October 2014 between Espanyol and Barcelona. The Blaugrana won that tie on penalties (4-2) after drawing 1-1 in regular time. The following edition saw Blanquiazules get revenge on Barcelona, beating the Spanish giants 1-0 in Tarragona. In 2019, Girona became the first Catalan club besides Espanyol to face the Camp Nou side in this fixture.
This competition is different from the Copa Catalunya. Both are organized by the Catalan Football Federation but the Catalan Super Cup is a one-off match while the Catalan Cup is a knockout competition that began in 1984. Both tournaments are exclusive to clubs from Catalonia.
