About Serie D
The Campeonato Brasileiro Série D is Brazil’s fourth-tier league founded in 2009. Initially, only 40 teams could participate but in 2016, the number of contestants was increased to 68. The teams are split into 17 groups of four, with 32 teams – 17 group winners and 15 runners-up – moving on to the next stage, which is a two-legged knockout tournament.
