The tournament’s last group will not be one to ignore. Together, top seeds Cameroon, Gabon, Zambia and Tunisia complete their table, with the Indomitable Lions likely to take their group by storm.

Group D – The favorites at the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations

The Estádio Alto da Chela in Angola - a stadium dedicated to the 2010 Africa Cup of NationsCameroon:

The Cameroon national football team have had their name deteriorated in recent years, having failed to reach the 2006 world cup, and losing unnecessarily to Egypt in the final of the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations then held in Ghana, after beating the hosts in the semifinals.

The devotement of Inter Milan’s star striker Samuel Eto’o for his national team has been questioned on several occasions over the past, but the former African Footballer of the Year seems ready to convince his fans regarding his loyalty and efforts for the Indomitable Lions.

His presence along with other famous African players such as Carlos Kameni and Emana, could consequently give the Cameroonians the required power to cruise into the tournament’s quarterfinals.

Tunisia: Cameroon playing against Tunisia during CAN 2008 in Ghana

The Tunisians’ last participation in the Africa Cup of Nations was in 2008, when they failed to advance into the semifinals of the competition, following a loss to Cameroon.

This time, Tunisia are back in form, and there is no doubt they will do everything in their power to profit from their dramatic qualification a few months ago. Their key player Dos Santos, also a striker, is therefore expected to give his side the display which could silence opposing crowds in Angola.

Group D - The outsiders at the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations

Gabon:

The Azingo Nationale had a fast start in the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations’ qualifiers, but still, this doesn’t put them among the favorites of the Group D.

Gabon playing against Morocco during a World Cup qualifierGabon have an advantage though, as they have already played against Cameroon twice in their road for the African tournament’s finals; unhappily, the Gabonese players have reasons to keep on fearing the Indomitable Lions, following the fact that 2-0 was the result of their last meeting in favor of the Cameroonians.

Reaching the knockout phase will eventually be a must for the Azingo Nationale; nevertheless, watching them get an early exit will not be a dishonor, looking at the strength of their challengers in their table.

Zambia: Zambia's Felix Katong joins in the celebration as the team scores a goal during CAN 2008

The Chipolopolo will be expecting to get the most out of their 3 group stage games, but in fact, this is far from being easy.

The Zambians can already consider themselves as witnesses of Cameroons’ merciless attacks, as they were trampled by the Indomitable Lions during the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations.

As for Tunisia, their hunger for African success could help them find the weaker part of Zambia, only to spoil the Chipolopolo’s dreams. Perhaps, Gabon will be Zambia’s easiest opponents, in view of both sides’ equal abilities.

Group D – The crunch match at the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations

Gabon vs Tunisia:

Everybody expects Cameroon to progress easily into the knockout phase of the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations. Everyone also looks forward to seeing Zambia occupy the last position in Group B. The issue of settlement is then left with Gabon and Tunisia.

Both sides will meet on January 17, and without doubt, the score line of this encounter will be unforgettable. The winner of this game is likely to secure a place in the tournament’s quarterfinals, whereas the loser faces the danger of returning home much earlier than wanted.

So, we know that in recent years, Cameroon have met Zambia, as well as Gabon; but in all, the Indomitable Lions have proved to be the dominating side. Tunisia have also been one of Cameroon’s opponents in 2008, but the Tunisians truly couldn’t contain the hungry lions, and in the end, they saw themselves losing 3-2 to a fierce Cameroonians side.

Group D – Previous revealing statistics

Since May 3 2008, Cameroon and Gabon have met 4 times.  Cameroon got a 2-1 defeat on the first occasion while playing their first leg encounter ahead of the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations, but they bounced back with a 2-0 victory in the second leg.

Gabon then conceded 4 goals and scored one in their 2 next meetings against the Indomitable Lions. Obviously, these are great statistics, but also hard ones for the Azingo Nationale to overturn.

Group D - The big questions

Will Cameroon live up to expectations? Will there be a surprise in Group D? Who do you think will reach the quarterfinals?
