Over USL League Two
USL League Two geschiedenis, opzet, organisatie, media-aandacht
USL League Two, voorheen bekend als de Premier Development League (PDL), is een voetbalcompetitie voor amateur- en semiprofessionele clubs uit de Verenigde Staten en Canada. De competitie werd opgericht in 1995 en wordt beheerd door de United Soccer League (USL). Het maakt echter geen deel uit van de drie hoogste divisies die worden erkend door de United States Soccer Federation (USSF).
De competitie volgt een schema van lente tot zomer, waarbij het reguliere seizoen van USL League Two loopt van mei tot juli en de play-offs worden afgesloten in augustus. Het aantal deelnemers bereikte in 2022 meer dan 100, verdeeld over vier conferenties: Eastern, Central, Southern en Western. Elke conferentie bestaat uit verschillende divisies met een wisselend aantal teams.
USL League Two-clubs spelen 10-14 reguliere seizoenswedstrijden binnen hun divisies, waarbij de beste één tot drie teams doorgaan naar de play-offs, afhankelijk van de grootte van de divisie. De play-offs van USL League Two werken volgens een knock-out systeem, beginnend met de kwartfinales van de conferentie, gevolgd door de halve finales en de finale. De vier conferentiekampioenen bereiken de nationale halve finales, waar de winnaars strijden om de titel in de USL League Two Championship Game.
Oorspronkelijk de Premier League, werd de competitie in 1997 de Premier Development Soccer League (PDSL), waarna "Soccer" werd weggelaten om in 1999 de USL Premier Development League (PDL) te worden. In 2018 werd het omgedoopt tot USL League Two. De midden jaren 2000 waren ook bijzonder, omdat een overeenkomst met Fox Soccer Channel het mogelijk maakte om voor het eerst live wedstrijden landelijk uit te zenden.
Richmond Kickers won de eerste USL League Two-titel in 1995 door de San Francisco All-Blacks United te verslaan. Central Coast Roadrunners schreef geschiedenis door opeenvolgende titels te winnen in 1996 en 1997, een prestatie die later werd geëvenaard door de Chicago Sockers (1999 en 2000) en Cape Cod Crusaders (2002 en 2003). Ondertussen boekten de Flint City Bucks aanzienlijk succes in de tweede helft van de jaren 2010, met drie USL League Two-kampioenschappen van 2014 tot 2019, waarvan twee titels werden behaald onder de vorige naam, de Michigan Bucks.
