The two-time Olympic gold medalists fell to an unexpected defeat at Wembley despite dominating the game in almost its entirety.
Two defensive mistakes and bad luck were the cause of Uruguay's shock 2-0 defeat to Senegal at Wembley Stadium on Sunday.

Uruguay, who beat the United Arab Emirates 2-1 on Thursday, conceded two early goals from Moussa Konate, which both came from headers, and despite playing with a numerical advantage for almost fifty minutes, simply couldn't find the back of the net.

When Abdoulaye Ba reduced the Africans to ten-men after impeding Luis Suarez when he was through on goal, it seemed that Uruguay would turn the game around but an intelligent Senegal stood strong, particularly in a defensive sense.

The two-time Olympic soccer champions dominated their rivals for great part of the match, but were let down by poor finishing and simply some bad luck.

Gaston Ramirez, who scored a brilliant free-kick against the UAE, rattled the crossbar with a similar free-kick in the first half, and Napoli scoring-machine Edinson Cavani had a goal-bound effort cleared off the line by a Senegal defender.

Uruguay had a big task ahead of them in the second half, as they had to score at-least two goals to force a draw, but although they created numerous goal-scoring opportunities it just wasn't to be their day.

Uruguay's night was summed up in the final moments, when Suarez, one of the most dangerous strikers in the world, was through on goal but his tame effort was easily saved by Senegal goalkeeper Ousmane Mane.

The United Kingdom's 3-1 victory over the United Arab Emirates in the later game, means that Uruguay have no choice but to beat the hosts in Cardiff on Wednesday to assure themselves of progression to the quarter-finals.

Midfielder Egidio Arevalo Rios, one of Uruguay's three over-aged players along with Suarez and Cavani, is confident that Uruguay will progress despite the loss.

"We will fight for qualification, it is time to rest and to begin to think about England [Great Britain]. Our objective is to reach the next phase and I am convinced that we will achieve this," Rios stated.

Even if this appears to be a difficult task, the likes of Honduras have shown that nothing is impossible, after eliminating Spain, one of the pre-tournament favourites, after their 1-0 win in Newcastle on Sunday.
