Lionel Messi is loved by many in his home country, but evidently not all. The Barcelona superstar, who has a statue in Buenos Aires, saw his monument get vandalized.
The incident occurred on Sunday night in Paseo de las Glorias. The target was the statues two legs, as both were removed.
This is not the first time that Messi’s statue has been vandalized since it was unveiled in June 2016. It suffered a similar attack back in January 2017.
As seen in the picture below, the statue was left lying on the floor since both legs were removed. It will now be transferred to the Department of Monuments and Works in the capital city.
Lionel is a beloved figure in his home country. The 30-year-old helped his nation to three finals, although they lost them all, and almost single-handedly led La Albiceleste into the 2018 World Cup by scoring a hat-trick on the final day to secure qualification.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner will be loved even more if he guides the South American powerhouse to the title in Russia. However, they must first overcome their group stage opponents: Croatia, Iceland, and Nigeria.
The Argentine is expected back in action on Tuesday. After back-to-back draws in La Liga, Barcelona hosts Sporting in the Champions League hoping to return to winning ways.
