The last time the WNT played Russia was in February 2014 for two international friendlies at the FAU Stadium in Boca Ranton and the Georgia Dome. The hosts won the first fixture 7-0 and the second one 8-0. These two teams have also played each other 10 times in total. These will also be the final WNT matches before the National Women's Soccer League kick-off in his historic fifth season.

Jilian Anne Ellis is the manager of the hosts. The 50-year-old UK-born coach has been in charge of USMNT since 2012 on an interim basis, and was officially appointed as the permanent manager in 2014. As head coach, she has won the 2014 CONCACAF Women's Championship, the 2015 Algarve Cup and the 2015 Canada Women's World Cup with the WNT. At the personal level, she has won the 2015 CONCACAF Women's Coach of the Year award and the 2015 FIFA World Women's Coach of the Year award. 

Russia

The Russian side is managed by Russian football midfielder Elena Fomina (below), who coaches for ShVSM Izmailovo in the Russian women's football championship. She is well-remembered for scoring a last-minute winner at the 2003 World Cup against Australia in their first match.
