For all the disappointment and heartbreak PSG players felt after crashing out of the UEFA Champions League, their fans felt anger for their shock elimination. This was evident upon the players return to the French capital.
Unai Emery’s boys traveled to Camp Nou on Wednesday with a 4-goal advantage, with progression appearing to have been in the bag. What happened at Barcelona was nothing short of history.
The Catalan giants won 6-1, overcoming an away goal to score a last-minute winner, sealing their spot in the quarter-final. For Les Parisiens, it meant returning to Paris heartbroken.
But the PSG aces encountered something even worse: abuse from the supporters. According to the Daily Mail, the players’ cars were vandalized and faced threats directed at them and their families.
The Ligue 1 giants were confronted by the outraged faithful at the Bourget Airport. One person is believed to have been struck by a car, with police investigating that incident.
The club later issued a statement on the confrontation, condemning the “extremely hostile and aggressive climate” the players endured from the fans. They also offered to help police get to the bottom of this incident.
A police investigation is under way to establish exactly what happened.
"The club, and all those present, have informed the investigators of their readiness to help the investigation, to get to the bottom of this regrettable incident.
"The club strongly condemns the actions and behaviour of the individuals in question."
