Match stats and facts

  • Chelsea have won their past nine league games
  • The Blues lost 3-2 to Sunderland this past May
  • That marked the first win for the Black Cats in their past ten meetings (L8, D1)
  • Chelsea haven't lost back-to-back games against Sunderland since May 2001

Ten wins in ten for Chelsea coming up?

Sunderland

Although they finished in 17th - thus barely avoiding the drop - Sunderland may not be so lucky this time around. David Moyes's side have won just three times all season and as such sit in the bottom of the table with a dismal 11 points from 15 games. However, the hosts did manage to beat reigning champs Leicester City earlier this month at this same ground, and hence visiting Chelsea will be wary of the Black Cats on home turf.

Arguably, the biggest player for the struggling side has been veteran striker Jermaine Defoe. Despite his advancing years, he's netted eight out of Sunderland's 14 goals and has acquired a bit of a knack for scoring against the Blues. In fact, he's the only player to have scored against Chelsea whilst representing four different clubs (Tottenham, West Ham, Portsmouth, and Sunderland).

Unfortunately for the hosts, they are facing a huge injury crisis. Moyes will have to make do without a crop of players, including Paddy McNair, Lee Cattermole, Lynden Gooch, Jack Rodwell, and Duncan Watmore who sit out due to injury, whilst Didier Ndong is suspended.

Chelsea

Meanwhile, it wasn't the prettiest of wins, but at the end of the day, a win is a win. Chelsea come into this game having secured a hard-fought and well-deserved 1-0 win over West Brom, courtesy of an excellent strike from the in-form Diego Costa. Antonio Conte's men have not lost a game in nearly three months, when they were humiliated in a 3-0 drubbing by cross-town rivals Arsenal. Since then, they have put together a very impressive nine game winning streak, beating teams like Manchester United (4-0) and Manchester City (3-1) along the way.

That has seen the Blues vault to the top of the table. And thanks to Everton beating Arsenal yesterday, Chelsea can now extend their lead to a very comfortable six points heading into the next round. However, the visitors will be missing key player Eden Hazard due to a knock suffered during the game against West Brom. This could see Willian receive a rare start in his absence, or further game-time for Cesc Fabregas, who has had to settle for a spot on the bench for much of this campaign.
