The republic of Ireland had not qualified for the European Championship until 1988 when the tournament was hosted by Germany. They played eight matches, won four, drew three and lost one. The north-western European country then stayed out the European competition after failing to qualify in five consecutive attempts. But in 2011, they finally qualified for Euro 2012 after beating Estonia 5-1 on aggregate. However, at the Euro 2012, they put up a disappointing performance by losing all three games and conceding nine goals in the process. This was their worst ever performance at an international competition. They have now qualified for the Euro 2016 in France and will be hoping to redeem their image following the disappointing outing four years ago.
Recent form
In 2015, Ireland played a total of nine international matches. They won four, drew four and lost one. This year, they have played two international games, one against Slovakia (draw) and the other was a defeat to Switzerland. As of the May 2016 FIFA world rankings, they sit at the 31st place while in the UEFA rankings, they are at the 41st spot.
Manager’s profile
Martin Hugh Michael O’Neill is the current manager of the Republic of Ireland national football team. The former Leicester City boss joined the Green Army on November 5, 2013, and his former team captain Roy Keane was appointed as assistant manager. He won his first game with the Irish side 3-0 against Latvia, then played out to a goalless draw against Poland four days later. He then tasted his first defeat at home against Serbia in March the same year. 
The Irish side qualified for the Euro 2016 after beating Bosnia and Herzegovina 3-1 on aggregate in the qualification play offs earlier last year. Since taking charge of the Republic of Ireland, he has overseen 24 matches, won 10, drawn nine and lost five. Although coach Martin O’Neill has no experience with the Irishmen at the Euros, he will be hoping that his first attempt will be a huge successful.
UEFA Euro 2016 broadcasters in the Republic of Ireland
RTE and TV3 will share live TV coverage for the Euro 2016 competition. Initial broadcast rights holders RTE reached an agreement with TV3 Ireland this year to sub-license 22 matches. RTE retain the rights to 30 matches, including all Republic of Ireland matches and the Euro 2016 final, which it will share with TV3.
