Just last weekend, Benfica gave their legions of fans plenty to celebrate. In a title race that was probably the closest Portuguese football followers have seen in a while, the Eagles successfully held off Sporting CP to clinch their 35th league title. It was also the first for Rui Vitoria since taking over, and the third for Benfica in a row.
With that accomplished, next up for Benfica is the Taça da Liga. The Eagles are also the record holders in this competition, with six titles so far to their name. In fact, only Sporting Braga and Vitoria de Setubal have managed to break Benfica's hold on this trophy - in 2013 and in 2008. Last season saw them edge out Maritimo 2-1 as they clinched their sixth title, and a year later, they are seeking to make it a seventh - and more important a second trophy for Vitoria - this Friday.
However, Maritimo will obviously have other ideas. Curiously enough, these two sides will meet yet again at this same juncture. The Green and Reds did not enjoy a good Primeira Liga campaign as they finished the season in a disappointing 13th and ended up their last four consecutive fixtures. Although the winners of the Taça da Liga do not qualify for any kind of European competition, winning this trophy would be significant for Maritimo for at least two reasons.
First, it would obviously give them a chance to get some revenge on Benfica for their 2015 loss. And second, it would give their weary supporters something to smile about, especially considering that the team escaped relegation by just six points.
So, will Rui Vitoria conclude his debut season with Benfica by clinching another trophy? Or will Maritimo be the third side other than Benfica to win the Taça da Liga?
