The defending champions will kick start their defence for the title with a home fixture against Estoril. The match comes at the back of a disappointing pre-season which has seen the eagles suffer defeats in four of their last five matches. This included one at the hands of Sporting Lisbon which is managed by former manager Jorge Jesus who took a snipe at his former employees claiming that they were scared of his side.
"Benfica were scared of Sporting and that is down to how we started the game," Jesus told reporters.
"I felt like Benfica was afraid and Sporting was more of a team. The players and the fans deserve to be congratulated.
"It isn't easy to get the team playing like they did in just five weeks and it is all down to the intelligence of the players.
"We were the best team throughout the 90 minutes and we had the most chances."
Having guided Benfica to a league win in the last campaign, Jesus will now be aiming to be involved in the title race once again this season.
"Any Sporting coach has to play for the title," he said.
"Saying things like 'we are going to try' doesn't wash with the history that this club has. We have to go for it."
Pressure will now be mounting on new manager Rui Vitoria with title rivals Porto and Sporting Lisbon having won their opening matches. After a disastrous pre-season the 45 year old will be hoping his side can hit the ground from the word go. What settles well for Vitoria is the fact that his side have fared well against their opponents on Sunday having triumphed in all five meetings between the two sides.
