Portugal and Germany will be fighting for one spot in the Finals of the Euro U-21 tournament this Saturday after one of the most complicated qualification rounds they've had to endure. Both sides remain undefeated as they head into the semi-finals, where Germany will try to upset the Portuguese team for the first time in four matches.
Portugal won their first game against England with a tight 1-0 score, and managed to keep their unbeaten streak going with consecutive draws against Italy and Sweden. Coach Rui Jorge may not be as calm as expected since he will not have Tiago Ilori available after the center back was stretchered out during the team's last match against Sweden.
On the other side of the pitch will be Germany, a side that has shown their class when facing different circumstances that could've broken down any other team. Their first match ended with a 1-1 draw against Serbia. That point was not easy to get since the Germans had one man sent off, having to endure the Balcanic attack for most of the game. Their 3-0 win against Denmark and the final 1-1 draw against Czech Republic secured their spot among the final four teams, but their next challenge will surely be one to consider tough.
While William Carvalho and Ricardo Pereira will be the men to watch for the Germans, Portugal will have to keep a good eye on Emre Can and Max Meyer, while shot-stopper Marc-André Ter Stegen tries to earn his second clean sheet of the tournament.
Portugal's U-21 record against their German counterpart is one to brag about. The German side has never been able to defeat Portugal in their three previous meetings. A Selecao das Quinas won the first two games by a one-goal margin (2-1 in 2004, 1-0 in 2006) and their last meeting ended with a 4-2 win over Die Mannschaft. Will this be Germany's time to get even?
