Very few expected Chipolopolo to go as far as the finals of the 2012 edition of AFCON, let alone to win it. Repeating the same heroics in their 17th appearance in the competition this year would undoubtedly cement their place as one of the footballing heavyweights in the continent. As per the latest FIFA CAF rankings (released Jan 8, 2015), Zambia are 11th in Africa and a respectable 50th on the world stage.
How Zambia qualified for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations
Goalkeeper Kennedy Mweene played a starring role in the match that sent Zambia to CAN 2015, saving a penalty that might have prevented Chipolopolo from registering their invaluable 1-0 victory against Mozambique on November 15th 2014. Mweene's heroics, together with striker Given Singuluma’s clinical touch on the day, took the 2012 victors to 8 points, allowing them to finish as the second best team in Group F.
