Hosting the match in Tamale has given the Black Stars huge relief. The last time they played at home, the game took place in Kumasi. The crowd was hostile. This led Ghana to achieve nothing more than a draw against minnows Uganda.
Today, things are different. Fans in Tamale hardly have the opportunity to see national team players in real life. That said, there is no resentment concerning the Black Stars’ failure to lift the country’s flag high at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.
Against Guinea, the home crowd is expected to fully rally behind the national team in the hopes of picking maximum points. Captain Asamoah Gyan didn’t forget to salute the supporters’ spirit of solidarity.
“The support has been amazing. We want to thank the fans who have come here in their numbers to greet and welcomes us,” the former Sunderland striker told the press on Monday.
“We are happy with what we have seen here. We know that victory and good performance is what they want on Wednesday and we will give them exactly that.”
In Morocco last week, the Black Stars succumbed to a 1-1 draw against Guinea. Gyan opened the scoring after 27 minutes but Ibrahima Traore stunned Maxwell Konadu's defence with an outrageous volley.
Still, the Ghanaians enter Matchday 4 of the 2015 AFCON qualifiers as leaders of their group. They possess five points ahead of Uganda and Guinea who both have four. Emmanuel Adebayor’s Togo are last with three points.
