Jurgen Klinsmann was on the end of mixed criticism after he announced the squad he was taking to Brazil for the World Cup. Despite the frustration from some fans, the German guided the USMNT out of their group, being eliminated by Beligum in a 2-1 overtime thriller.
On Friday, the USMNT will return to the pitch in an international friendly that will take place at Rentschler Field in Connecticut. The biggest highlight of this match will be the return of Landon Donovan, which will also be his final international match before his retirement.
The LA Galaxy star has not had the greatest relationship with Klinsmann over the last few years, but he will put an end to a 15-year international career, which has had some memorable moments.
Friday's appearance will be Donovan's 157th appearance for the USA, and he will be hopeful of adding to his 57 goals, which makes him the all-time leading scorer of the USMNT.
"Obviously, it's going to be a special night on Friday as everyone in the US Soccer family will have the chance to honor the amazing career of Landon Donovan," Klinsmann said.
Ecuador will not want to just show up and go through the motions in Donovan's retirement match.
Having failed to make it out of their group in Brazil, La Tricolor dismissed Reinaldo Rueda and appointed Sixto Vizuete as interim manager in his second stint with Ecuador.
The new manager has already taken part in two matches, having defeated Bolivia 4-0, followed by a 1-0 defeat to Brazil. Friday will give the interim manager another chance to impress the fans and the federation, as he looks to see out his deal.
