About Women's Friendly

History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage

A women’s friendly match is a non-competitive soccer game played by two female national teams. These matches are usually held during international breaks or as warmup matches for major tournaments, such as the FIFA Women’s World Cup or regional competitions such as the Copa América.

The first women’s friendly match was held back in 1881, although the first official friendly clash took place in 1920 between an English team and a French club. For any game to be considered a friendly game, both teams must agree on the conditions in which the game is held, such as the number of substitutions or tiebreakers -if any-.

Friendly women’s matches must not be confused with invitational tournaments, especially since there may be a trophy up for grabs in those gatherings.
