Preview: PSG vs Lyon
Reigning Ligue 1 champions PSG look set to face a tough test when title aspirants Lyon come to town in what should be an entertaining clash at the Parc des Princes on Sunday. Les Parisiens may presently sit on top of the table, but only slightly, as Les Gones are just two points behind, and there's Olympique Marseille and Lille sandwiched in between the two sides on 27 and 26 points respectively. Then there's Montpellier and perhaps even Monaco who certainly will want to make themselves known this season. It's still early on, but this campaign's title race could be shaping up to be something truly exciting, and PSG may find it a lot less easy to cruise to victory as opposed to prior years.
For starters, Thomas Tuchel's side have already lost three fixtures; by contrast, Marseille, Lille, and Lyon - the other three teams in the top four - have only lost once. What's keeping Les Parisiens slightly ahead of their competitors, however, is their number of wins (nine) as opposed to draws (only one), whereas the three other teams post records of: Marseille (won eight, drawn three), Lille (won seven, drawn five), Lyon (won seven, drawn five). That means six points dropped for Marseille and ten for Lille and Lyon - points that could potentially prove costly later on.
So, to that end, Lyon will be doing their very best to make up some of that ground when they arrive in Paris on Sunday evening. Rudi Garcia's side, who impressed in last season's Champions League by making a run all the way to the semi-finals, come into this tie in excellent form. Les Gones have not lost a Ligue 1 match since September 15, when they were beaten 2-1 by Montpellier, and are presently on a four game winning streak. However, they have long experienced frustration at the Parc des Princes, where it's been well over a decade since they tasted victory.
Meanwhile, PSG, fresh off a 5-1 win over Istanbul Basaksehir to cap off their Champions League group stage campaign, recovered from a two match winless spell in Ligue 1 by defeating Montpellier 3-1, during which Kylian Mbappe hit a personal milestone by scoring his 100th goal for the club. This game will be especially important as Lille could potentially dislodge PSG as league leaders should Tuchel's squad not pick up maximum points from this tricky encounter, but the hosts will be taking on a side who will also be keen on revenge after losing the Coupe de la Ligue final this past July and have, as noted before, been in excellent form over the past few months.
