About
Play Sports 2 history, coverage, features
Play Sports is a package of television channels partly owned and operated by the Belgian cable distributor Telenet. It was launched in 2005 as Prime Sport, but it would later be rebranded to Sporting Telenet. The service would go through another rebranding in 2012 when Play Sports was elected by its parent company.
Over the years, Play Sports has turned into a household name for sports coverage in Belgium, thanks to the availability of bundles in most pay-tv companies. Each package comes with different channels, which will be in charge of covering different disciplines. Some of the sports covered by this platform have included football, basketball, golf, motorsport, cyclocross, tennis, hockey, and more.
Play Sports 2 is considered as the package’s second most-relevant channel. It has usually aired some of the most interesting events to which the company owns broadcasting rights. While it specializes in football coverage there have been other disciplines aired on this network.
Speaking about football, Play Sports 2 has covered leagues such as the Eredivisie and the English Premier League. Added to that, Play Sports 2 has also provided coverage for continental tournaments such as the UEFA Europa League. Additional coverage to live games, such as highlights’ shows, and sports newscasts might also be available on this channel.
Play Sports 2 started airing its content in Standard Definition, but the company managed to transition its entire offer of channels to High-Definition technology in the 2016-17 season. This saw Play Sports becoming the first sports package to make such a transition in Belgium.
