Het UEFA Europees Kampioenschap, voor het eerst gestart in 1960, stond tot 1968 bekend als de Europese Nations Cup. Het toernooi wordt sinds 1960 elke vier jaar gehouden, met uitzondering van 2020 toen het werd geannuleerd vanwege de wereldwijde Covid-19 pandemie. Ondanks dat het toernooi naar 2021 werd verschoven, bleef de titel "UEFA Euro 2020" behouden, conform de traditie die in 1996 is begonnen om elke competitie te brandmerken met de aanduiding "UEFA Euro" gevolgd door het [jaar].
In principe moeten alle teams, met uitzondering van de gastlanden, een uitgebreid kwalificatieproces doorlopen. Het UEFA Europees Kampioenschap heeft een gestage uitbreiding ondergaan sinds het begin in 1960, toen slechts vier teams deelnamen. In 1980 nam dit aantal toe tot acht, voordat het in 1996 opnieuw werd verdubbeld. Vanaf 2016 besloot de UEFA om nog eens acht teams toe te voegen aan het toernooi, waardoor het totaal op 24 kwam.
In de huidige opzet zijn de 24 teams verdeeld in zes groepen van vier teams. Elk team speelt een keer tegen de anderen. De beste twee teams van elke groep, plus de vier best gekwalificeerde derde teams, gaan door naar de laatste 16. Deze ronde wordt gespeeld in een knock-out formaat, gevolgd door de kwartfinales, halve finales en uiteindelijk de finale.
Spanje, Duitsland, Italië en Frankrijk behoren tot de meest succesvolle teams in de geschiedenis van het UEFA Europees Kampioenschap, met meerdere titels op hun naam.
Ondanks de populariteit in Europa, begon de uitzending van het UEFA Europees Kampioenschap pas in de 21e eeuw in de VS, waar de enige optie voor de edities van 2000 en 2004 pay-per-view was via Setanta Sports. In 2008 verwierf ESPN de tv-uitzendrechten en livestreaming voor de editie van 2008, na het sluiten van een overeenkomst met de UEFA in 2006. ESPN heeft vervolgens ook de edities van 2012, 2016 en 2020 van het UEFA Europees Kampioenschap uitgezonden en live gestreamd, terwijl ABC de rechten heeft verworven om een select aantal wedstrijden uit te zenden.
In 2021 slaagde Fox Sports er echter in om ESPN te overtreffen en verwierf succesvol de rechten om de UEFA European Championships van 2024 en 2028 uit te zenden en live te streamen. Daarom zullen zij de exclusieve tv- en livestreaming-rechten hebben voor de komende twee edities van de competitie.
