Barca face a familiar Copa del Rey foe
Just as Arsenal can’t seem to avoid Bayern Munich in the Champions League, there is no escape from Barcelona for Athletic Bilbao in the Copa del Rey. The Basque club will face the defending champions over a two-legged tie, with the Blaugrana making the trip on Thursday.
This will be the third straight season in which these two clubs meet in this competition. The first of their two previous meetings came in the 14/15 final in which Lionel Messi scored a wonder goal.
They then met again the following season, but in the quarter-final stage. The Catalan giants prevailed once more. Luis Enrique will face a tough decision, though, heading into the game.
His players have just resumed training since the festive period began. This means the manager can either rest his star players, notably Messi; Neymar; and Suarez. With the second leg being at Camp Nou, Enrique could take an early gamble.
The boss could, however, use this game to get his star names back into shape ahead of the return of La Liga. Ernesto Valverde will likely field his strongest starting eleven.
