About U19 Championship

History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage

The Championnat National U19 is France's top under-19 football competition, organized by the French Football Federation (FFF). While it began in 1990, it officially became an under-19 event in 2009, having previously been known as the "Championnat National des moins de 17 ans" and later as "Championnat National 18 ans."

The tournament follows a summer-to-spring schedule and features 56 teams: 55 from France and one from Monaco. The participants are divided into four regional groups of 14, with clubs facing every other side in their group in a double round-robin format.

The group stage consists of 26 rounds, with the group winners and runners-up advancing to the playoffs to determine the champion. The winner qualifies for the UEFA Youth Champions League.

PSG and Lyon have been the most successful clubs in this competition. Notably, all but one of PSG's titles have been won since the rebranding to an under-19 event. FC Nantes claimed the inaugural title in the 1990-91 season.
