About Torneos de Verano
History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage
The Torneos de Verano is the name given to a series of friendly football tournaments held by Argentine football teams every year, mostly during the South American summer between January and February. The first Torneo de Verano was held in 1968, and due to its success and intensity, the number of friendly football competitions held in Argentina has increased over the years.
Some of the most popular Torneos de Verano have been named after the city hosting them. Examples include the Copa Ciudad de Buenos Aires, the Copa Ciudad de Mar del Plata, and the Copa Provincia de Salta. There have been some years where up to fourteen competitions have been held simultaneously by different teams. Argentine clubs have also invited football rivals from other South American countries, including Chile, Brazil, Peru, and Uruguay.
The team with the most titles in the Torneos de Verano is Boca Juniors, with 48 titles. Other Argentine greats such as River Plate (37), Racing (18), or Independiente (17) have also left their mark in the summer tournaments’ history.
Despite being consistently played since their creation, the Torneos de Verano has been suspended three times: once in 1974, in 2013, and lastly, in 2021 due to the global COVID-19 outbreak.
