Atletico Madrid is officially the team with the worst attack record in European top flight football at the moment, Spanish publication Marca has confirmed. Over the weekend, Diego Simeone's side extended their non-scoring run by drawing 0-0 with mid-table side Rayo Vallecano.

Verily, the record is quite baffling for numerous factors with the club having been tipped for greater things this season. Despite losing talisman Antoine Griezmann to Barcelona this summer, Los Rojiblancos entered the 2019/2020 campaign more than ready, paying top dollar to secure the signing of Benfica wonder-kid Joao Felix.

The tendency of a goal-fest being often witnessed even heightened after the 100 million euro-rated teenager showed glimpses of his prowess against the likes of Real Madrid and the MLS All-Star in the pre-season tour. By linking up with Diego Costa and Alvaro Morata, the firepower in the roster for Simeone's side was significantly boosted, ranking among the most potent across the top leagues in Europe.

Nevertheless, the preliminary stages of the new season has presented a contrasting scenario with the trident failing to be as lethal as anticipated. Against Valladolid on Sunday, Atletico Madrid matched a 14-year-old feat with its seven-goal tally in eight matches - the club's worst scoring run in recent memory.

In the ongoing campaign, Morata, Costa and Felix have so far contributed a combined four goals across all competitions. With three of Los Colchoneros' last five league matches finishing in a 0-0 draw, the team has now managed an overall average of 0.875 goals per game since La Liga began this season.

In contrast Galatasaray, who sits 61st on the UEFA Club Coefficient ranking, is not far away from the numbers of the Wanda Metropolitano outfit as it has managed an average of 0.857 goals per game. A struggling Manchester United has registered 1.12 goals per game whereas cross-town rivals Manchester City have accrued an average of 3.37 goals per game.

Meanwhile, what Atletico lacks in its attack, it makes up for it in defense. As things stands, the red and whites have conceded just four goals in La Liga this season - the joint best alongside Athletic Club de Bilbao.
