Los Blancos' new manager has backed his skipper after claims of him doping in the past surfaced. Santiago Solari has described Sergio Ramos as an "honest man and a symbol of football" after claims of failing a drug test after the 2017 Champions League final surfaced.

A recent revelation by German publication Der Spiegel indicated that the 32-year-old Spanish international escaped punishment after he tested positive for a banned substance. The defender subsequently compounded his misery by taking a shower without permission before providing a urine sample to an anti-doping official in April 2018.

With the case resurfacing, Sergio Ramos released a series of statements on his official Twitter page on Saturday denying any wrongdoing after Real Madrid has jumped to his defense a day prior. Following his act, head coach of Real Madrid Santiago Solari has also added his voice to the allegations.

The Argentinian questioned the authenticity of the claim and stated that it should not be considered at all.

"[Ramos] is an honest man and a symbol of football, Real Madrid and Spanish sport," Solari address the media ahead of Tuesday's Champions League encounter with Roma.

"It is the duty of all of us to protect him, from the media too.

"Journalists should seek the truth and they also have their opinions, but the truth is not open to opinion and even less so when a player's name is being tainted.

"When that happens we lose our way and society is left helpless. It affects us all."

Real Madrid currently ranks sixth in La Liga and will need Ramos and his cohorts to step up as they aim to change their fortune under Santiago Solari.
