The hosts had a good start to their World Cup qualifying campaign, and for a bit, their fans thought they just may be able to worm their way into a spot in the 2018 edition coming up. Certainly, no one in Azerbaijan thought they would pip defending champs Germany to top spot, but second place could guarantee a team a spot in the play-offs. Two wins and a draw had them feeling confident, until they were crushed 4-0 by Northern Ireland.
Of course, an upset against Germany is highly unlikely, but given that they are playing at home, Azerbaijan will have that added incentive to cause problems. They are no strangers to causing bigger teams problems; back in 2014, they took on Italy in Palermo. And they managed to give the Azzurri a bit of a hard time, despite losing 2-1 (interestingly in that game, all the goals were scored by defender Giorgio Chiellini).
Germany
Reigning champions Germany come into this game having beaten England 1-0, courtesy of a brilliant goal from the retiring Lukas Podolski. Die Mannschaft have been in cruise control so far in qualifying, scoring 16, conceding zero, and picking up 12 points out of 12. Despite the absence of no. 1 shot-stopper Manuel Neuer, the visitors are expected to take care of business without much trouble. Overall, they are unbeaten in their last seven games since losing to France at the EURO 2016 semi-finals, with wins in six of them.
In addition, Joachim Low's men have won 19 out of their last 21 away games, with only surprise losses to Poland and Ireland during that time-frame. They have lost just one out of their last six road games and will be expected to make it five wins in five against Azerbaijan to remain comfortably on top of their group.
